Let’s talk….Sexual Health and Wellbeing

Updated: Nov 8, 2023

Hey there, beautiful souls!

It's time for a heart-to-heart on a topic that's as important as it is timely—sexual health and education. As a mental health nursing student, I'm right in the middle of this essential conversation, and I'm excited to share with you the forward-thinking approach our city has towards this crucial part of wellbeing.

Learning Through Social Media

First up, is social media. It's not just for your vacation photos or foodie adventures anymore. It's become an unexpected classroom, delivering bite-sized lessons in sexual health right to our feeds. Accounts like @Sh24_nhs are like hidden guides, popping up amidst our daily scroll to offer trusted advice and easy access to their confidential services. It's a modern twist on public health, tapping into our connected lives for the greater good.

TV Shows as Teachers

On the entertainment front, TV shows like Netflix's "Sex Education" are mixing humour with real-world issues, providing insights into sexuality and relationships. It's entertainment that educates, reflecting real questions and situations people face, making it a valuable, if informal, source of information.

Podcasts: Stories and Studies in Your Ears

Then there are podcasts, our trusty companions during commutes or workouts, which have become a goldmine for sexual health knowledge. They're like a friend in your ear, offering stories and information on topics that are often left out of regular health classes.

Apps: Your Pocket-Sized Clinic

From a clinical perspective, and as someone studying mental health nursing, I appreciate how vital sexual health services are to the fabric of our city. With the advent of health apps, booking an appointment at a sexual health clinic has become as straightforward as streaming an episode of your favourite show.

The Mind-Body Nexus

Diving deeper, my studies have illuminated the complex interplay between mental and sexual health. As mental health nurses, we're not just caregivers; we're educators and advocates, understanding that emotional well-being is inextricably linked to physical health, including sexual health.

A Student Nurse's Take

From my perspective as a student nurse, it's clear that London is teeming with conversations about sexual health, breaking down barriers and encouraging openness. Whether you're enjoying a quiet moment in a café or taking a walk in one of our many parks, know that discussing sexual health is as vital as being prepared for the city's unpredictable weather.

Let's continue to foster these discussions because when it comes to sexual health, staying silent means missing out on the chance to learn and grow. We're dedicated to promoting dialogue, embracing honesty, and actively pursuing holistic well-being. So, let's keep this conversation going, because every discussion, every consultation, every story shared is a step toward a healthier community.

Here's to talking, learning, and thriving together. Cheers! 🍵✨
